Really well executed video. The drawings are really well done and very consistent in terms of style and detailing. Good choice with the creamy color background, makes it look more personal/drawn, sketching kind of style. Sound could be synched a bit more to the images (when things are being listed off), and also the background music could be turned up a bit louder, because its a very simple melody it won't be distracting or competing with the voiceover. Overall the video keeps the viewer interested throughout the whole story, the characters work really well, which is the main point of interest in my opinion.

Project 3 - Meaningful Object Design Statement / Creative Brief

Design Statement:
For this short film, for the first time I attempted to do the animation through rotoscoping. All the moving images are done in black and white on top of a creamy color textured background. I chose to do it in as less color as possible to create a more bold and personal atmosphere. The background music was chosen to fit the style of the video, something that’s valiant, and epic. The script was kept to a minimum not to let the speech overpower the visual.

Always with me.

Overview:
The short movie is a portrayal of how important music is to me. It is a fairly abstract concept that displays how everywhere I go I always take my music with me. Through the narration I explain how music has such strong effects on me, it helps me think, passes time, relaxes me etc. Throughout the movie short clips display my body’s reaction to the song, such as foot or finger tapping. The video is almost a short simulation of my day, where it starts off by me turning on the iPod and continues on as I travel to different location throughout the day’s time.

Audience:
The target audience is people of age 16 to 28. The video aims at people who understand my point of view, who feel the same about their music players and take them everywhere they go. The way movie is stylized by using rotoscoping methods on top of a textured background will appeal to more of a younger audience who are used to seeing this kind of style.

Key Message:
This video is a display of a personal experience. Its not that I want the audience to learn anything from it, but rather understand my feelings towards music and relate themselves to the displayed experience.

Content Planning:
I plan to Rotoscope the whole animation. I will take footage with video camera, cut up the footage into a sequence of frames and trace every single frame to give it an animated feel. The imagery of the film will have very few color, all the animation will be black and white on top of a textured background. The map overview scenes will be animated in After Effects, using the same style as the rest of the film for consistency.

Visual/Conceptual References:
I was inspired to do my film through Rotoscoping, by movies “Waking Life” and “A Scanner Darkly”. For the first time I attempted this kind of technique, which turned out to be extremely time consuming, but I am pretty happy with the results. It was definitely a learning experience for me.

As I turn on my iPod, and a powerful noise bursts through the headphones…an uplifting sound.

Music is very important to me, its something I can’t do without. I bring it with me anywhere I travel, even if it’s just a ten-minute trip.

Music is a powerful and a very diverse device in terms of its function. It helps me pass time, it helps me concentrate, it helps me think. It even determines my mood.

I can’t help but tap my finger on the table to the beat.

No matter where I am, a beat is always there with me, and responding to it, I tap my foot rhythmically.

To all the places I traveled over the years, my play-list was always right by me.

1. And1 Mixtape (Vol. 1) is my favorite VHS tape I’ve had for years that I watched countless times, over many years. This tape represents my respect and love for the sport of basketball.

2. My favorite cologne that I received as a present from my aunt several years ago. This object represents me in the aspect of sense of smell.

3. My favorite basketball shoes that I have for five years now. They are my lucky shoes that I have worn to my every game since high school.

4. Field Notes pen is my favorite pen that I had for about a year now; it came together with my favored brand of sketchbooks.

5. Paint represents me as an artist and the phase in art school that I went though 4 years ago. As a designer art is closely related to my interest, and often acts as inspiration.

6. These are the only glasses I’ve ever owned and still use. They represent me in the sense of sight. Being a visual designer visual aspect of things obviously plays a huge role. And this object helps me to focus on it better.

7. I never leave my house without my iPod touch. Music plays a huge role in my life, it keeps me company on long bus rides and acts as inspiration to my design thinking.

8. My favorite watch that was given as a present to my by my parents on my 16th birthday. It is one of my prized possessions and it often reminds me of the time period that I first got them in.

9. This is the first CD I’ve bought myself. It represents the start of my independence and is now one of many CDs in my collection. It again refers to music being a big part of my life.

10. Field Notes sketchbook is my favorite brand of pocketbooks. Everywhere I go I bring it with me. On the go I constantly put down all my design ideas and sketches into it.

Project 2 - Countdown Design Statement / Creative Brief

Design Statement:
The medium through which the countdown is shown is magazine. In the post-production stage I adjusted the colors of all the clips, by intensifying the contrast and increasing concentration of the darks. The original footage was shot in the dark with one light on right side pointing at about 45 degrees down onto the magazine pages. The sound clips were taking from Freesound.org. Volume had to be increased for bigger impact on the viewer.

Flip Through

Overview:
The medium used to portray the ten second countdown is magazine. This video illustrates a person quickly flipping through magazine pages, and identifying numbers in the context of all other information. The video is very quick paced as it simulates a quick skim through a magazine, having the viewer’s eye jump from number to number zoning in and out. The cuts are very quick with numerous zoom in and outs on the numbers. On several occasions numbers would blur in and out, imitating a person’s eye targeting a number and focusing on it. The sound clips of pages flipping set a beat to every second, creating a consistent pace to frantic editing.

Audience/Context:
The audience for this short video is people aged fifteen to forty five. Due to the quick pace of the clip it would take a quick eye to follow all the movement and to identify the numbers in sequence. The colors in the video are fairly bright and bold, a countdown like this would fit into any fast paced context of anything magazine or book related. A big part of the context is also the ad placement, as a big portion of numbers is part of advertisements in the magazine.

Key Message:
The purpose of this video is not to portray a message but rather illustrate a simulation of a person flipping through a magazine through his/her eyes.

Content Planning:
All the numbers in the countdown will be taken from different pages of different magazines. All the transitions will be done through clips of page flips. Numbers will be identified on pages through the use of zoom in and outs, changes of focus and camera movement. Cut between the clips will have to be quick, camera should always be in movement to keep a consistent pace.

The final concept was inspired by the busy and colorful layouts of culture magazines. The fast paced editing through colorful images resembles how I look through these magazines, how quickly I skip through all the cluttered ad pages and images.

This experiment took place at about 8:30 inside my living room with windows open and outside, in front of my house's garage. Most noticeable and consistent sounds in both settings were the sounds of cars passing by in the distance, crickets going on and off, and the wind constantly whooshing. All of these sounds were in a constant pattern one after another, but were interrupted by some other noises such as peoples' conversations in the background or sudden noises inside the house such as the fridge rumbling. After a while I began to be more and more aware of this pattern. Several sounds were always constant in the background being overlaid by other noises on and off. The constant sounds were the most pure and best quality in comparison to other interruptive ones which weren't as clear. After this exercise it was interesting to see how much sounds we experience even in settings where there isn't much going on and how unaware we are of them. Closing my eyes really helped me to concentrate my hearing senses much more clearer to get the full experience of my surroundings.
